I´m trying to do as much promo for Highlander as a format as I can do. Part of it should be a series of articles published at Slovak mtg webpage. It should be focused on getting some "fresh blood" among highlander players (majority of highlander comunity here in Bratislava are people 25+). Problem with younger players is that, they often don´t have enough resources to build Tier 1 decks, so I would like to show them, that budget deck can at least decent opponent against Tier 1 decks.

I would like to hear your comments. Have I forgotten something? Or am I running some unplayable cards? And please do not advise me cards which cost more than +- 3â,¬ (4$)

I am pretty satisfied with my testing results so far.

I played league match against Mythrandir with his 5cc. I lost 1:2 but all three games were quite close, and I played this match with older version (with 3 more Plains, without Ghost Guarter)

I also played a league match against Georg (Ying Yang Weeny). I lost 1:2 both first two games were pretty thrilling damage races, however third game was soon over thanks to the sword of light and shadow and shriekmaw...

I played a friendly match with Mercator with WWu. I won 2:1. This time I got the equipment and won third game just with shadow + empyrial plate.

I also played a couple of friendly games vs. Vazdru (Mono B 0:2, UB Feries 1:2)

And 2:3 with my friends UBG Oath. (almost win also the third game, I almost decked him, as he wasn´t able to kill me because I tapped his Hellkite Overlord and Angel got Bound in Silence searched thru Lin Sivvy. He drew Pernicious Deed in last 3 cards :( )

well, i think the problem isnt cards more than 3â,¬, you have some there, i think the problem is old cards more than 3â,¬. One thing is to trade a 7-8â,¬ recent/playable card another is to spend 7-8 on a card that only play (some dont even play) in vintage and legacy.

Here´s a quick review (with the above sentence in mind):

Lands:
+ secludded steppe
+ flagstone of trokair
+ rustic clachan (better than mistveil in my opinion)
(mutavault would be great, but expensive)

1CC creatures
+ isamaru (over 3â,¬, but so is lions)
+ burrengton forge tender VS goldmeadow harrier
(figure would be awesome, but really expensive)

2cc creatures
+ knight of the white orchid
- steadfast guard (only vigilance isnt that great)

1cc spells
+beckon apparition (GY removal is essential)
+enlightened tutor

2cc spells
+ mask of memory

3cc spells
swords would be good, but a bit over the 3â,¬ (specially fire ice)
- fortify??

>4cc spells/creatures
+ exalted angel (nowadays it isnt that hard to get it) you could also try battlegrace, but its harder to cast)
+ ranger of eos??
+ PW.. always good, and ajani isnt that expensive.

Mora + than - ... but still hope it helps. 31 lands isnt too much? How has the worked for you in real life?

At least Akrasan Squire and Spectral Procession are missing.

Vazdru

#3
Looks good already - had some lucky draws to win our games.

I would change following cards:

+ Akrasan Squire - Bound in Silence
+ Beckon Apparition - Fortify
+ Black Vise - Steadfast Guard
+ Spectral Procession - Cloudchaser Kestral
+ Crib Swap - Sunlance
+ Tithe - Plains
+ Faith's Fetters - Children of Korlis

Far below the earth
Where the demons hunt the souls of those that sleep
In the city of the Vazdru and the Drin
Where the black flame burns inside the palace fountain.

Mirror Entity can't be very expensive. Take out Nightwind Glider for example.

i think that one is in there because he uses the "rebel strategy". but yes, cutting the rebel part might bring other things to the deck.

just remembered: pianna the nomad, not too expensive either.

cutting the rebel part

Since when Mirror Entity stopped being a Rebel?

Mistveil Plains does nothing. Tangle Wire is above awesome and not that expensive, they just don't float around much.

When i said the rebel part, i meant the rebel strategy, both rebels and rebels fetchers. ;)

Mirror entity is nice even without the rebels in the deck.

Yeap, tangle, winter orb, etc are great. however i tried to avoid listing older cards (tangle). IMO it´s "easier" for a new player to buy new cards than older ones.

Thibir

my heart is bleeding, but almost all of you suggested cuting some rebels.

- Children of Korlis
- Mistveil Plains
- Steadfast Guard
- Defiant Falcon
- Thermal Glider
- Nightwind Glider
- Lin Sivvy, Defiant Hero

I would like to keep:
Ramosian Sergeant - as he can do some dmg in early stages of game, later he can fetch some friends
Amrou Scout - still reasonable casting cost vs. p/t (it can fetch mirror entity)

Blade of the Sixth Pride
Knight of the Holy Nimbus
Whipcorder
all of them are cool even without rebel creature type, so I would definetly like to keep them

I am not sure about
Aven Riftwatcher - don´t know if he is that good without fetching him
Bound in Silence - I like this card very much. C´mon, it is fetchable spot removal which "kills" even creatures with shroud

+ mirror entity

when I would have time I´d like tu fill cards which I forgotten like, spectral procession, squire, appariton etc.
