QuoteClunky removal. Not even enchantress want this. Problematic because you need to leave mana up every turn, or it does nothing and you already spent a card and mana. Opponent also gets to decide if he is okay with the trade.

Enchantress would play this, IMO. not as a substitute to STp or PTE of course, but as an adition, cheap enchantment, removes creatures, what's not to like?! There's just one problem, enchantress isn't very good in general...

Quote
Very bad, IMO. Poor man's Spell Pierce, and even Pierce is not an auto-include.

Combo can sure use it when they kick off as protection and unlike spell pierce where it reads 2, this can easily go above 4-5 and it counters the most important stuff vs combo (eg: counters/disruption). But not definitely an auto-include in everyother deck.

QuoteGuys are bad, because they die to removal, right?

This is a really good target to cheat into play, as it can easily kill most opponents in one hit. And even if they kill it, you are drawing business for the rest of the game.

Well, like you said: cheat into play material, oath, reanimator, which i find there are better/ more consistent options, namely inkwell leviathan. But sure, trample is a value asset in this one.

Ok, so I seem to have some trouble with trice:

First i try to connect and it said: "host no available. socket problem" Uninstalled it and installed it, same thing! Uninstalled and installed and this time it doesnt even downloads the oracle database!

Any help, info would be appreciated!

Thanks.

P.S. Windows 7, cable internet (not my crappy week wi-fi one... :P)

By unbanning LFTL you go from games being centered around stoneforge and start having games centered around LFTL (at least in more controlish matchups).

Not saying we should ban him... just saying he's a cheap little annoying bastard! :P

I think this one isnt' broken per si but it bordelines it. It gives you CA, pressure on the table. It's cheap, splashble (if it were WW instead of 1W we porbably wouldnt be having this discussion...).

Is also tutors a card which is difficult to deal: equipments! Even if you don't play with skull you still have multiple swords, including SoFI.

The problem runs deeper than this single card: cards like pridemage are also problematic, because WOTC has decided to put everything on a stick meaning you really haven't to choose between steelshaper's gift and a creature or a naturalize and a creature.

They aren't broken, but they are annoying and specially with stoneforge games are starting to become centered around them. But there was once a time we games were centered around playing gifts (unbanned) and LFTL (banned). So i think we should wait a little more and see if the meta reacts to it.

New Editions / [COMM] review

Well, not a new edition per si, but still worth reviwing...

White:

Soul snare - Cute and if enchantress saw some play, this is an auto-include.

Blue:

Flutterstorm - very good, IMO. Too bad is restricted too instants and sorceries... :P Well see some play, IMO

Mind aglow - After reading "joining forces" better. ::) i think this was is still worth playing in some combo decks.

Trench gorger - Quite an interesting fatty, but i believe it to be highly susceptile to removal.

Black:

Sewer nemesis - The single B in it cost might make it worth it, since you still can choose even you.

Red:

Chaos warp - hmmm... a pseudo-removal at instant speed! and splashable. Would hate to kill a 2/2 and having to deal with a progenitus or a PW, though.  You can even play it on your own for the lulz.

Death by dragons - Epic in multpilayer. lol

Stranglehold - kills off fetches.. but at 4 CMC?!

Green:

Scavening ooze - One of the best cards in the set. Splashable, very nice body for its CMC. relevant abilities. Quite good, might even test in my 5cc

Multicolor

Animar, soul of elements - cute, but ackward cost..

Edric - with the ooze, the best card in the set. very, very playable.

Kaalia of the vast - sexy! makes me wanna build around it :P

Karador - quite expensive, but cute in mid games can be a power bomb, specially if survival was still around.

Ruhan - ackward cost, but still a 7/7

Lands

Homeward path - well, i really dont see the fuss about this one, yes it makes your progenitus not so vulnerable to bribery, but still one in 100. Not in anyway broken, IMO.

Do you realize that even if you pay 3 mana and your opponent pays none, you both still get to search for 3 lands?

hahha, nop i did not!

reading is tech. =/

bad card, then. limited to valakut then...

G
Sorcery    Rare
Join forces - Starting with you, each player may pay any amount of mana. Each player searches his or her library for up to X basic land cards, where X is the total amount of mana paid this way, puts them onto the battlefield tapped, then shuffles his or her library.

It's symmetrical, the other player gets to reap the benefits first, and it rewards playing basic lands. What is not to like?

Mostly you want play this with your opponent tapped out... i don't mean this is a card to build around, but certainly i can see ramp decks using it..

Weird that nobody talked about this one:

Talk about ramping, specially if you wait for your opponent to be tapped out.

the 7/7 seems a bit cost ackward, but in 5c aggro it's playable.

the other seems very very playable.

I absolutly agree on Spellskite. I´ve tried also Mental Mistep which was always a hit in my matches.

I dont know about birthing pod since it doesn´t have an immediate impact on the board, but to think about a kitchen finks turning into FTK which is evolving to a Shriekmaw (yaya magic christmas land) is quite impressive.

pod is quite impressive. It's not a card you want to build around like SoTF but definitely good

Mix feelings about this one... but going to go and say legal and hope they won't make a jace or goyf in there. From what i saw mainly overcosted and multiplayer stuff...

3. Shrine of Burning Rage         In Standard this sees heavy play, and there I saw the efficiency of this card.

And how about HL? it seems rather suboptimal.

Everything else i aggree more or less with you. Although my #1 is definitely batterskull, mainly because i think it's playable in more decks than pod. Pod is kind of cool for "coldcrow's sacrificial.deck" :P

ANd karn will definitely see more play than Bolas, because it's a lot easier to cast, specially in stax or stax variants.

Will there be pairings, or are we allowed to play against anybody?

There won't be any pairings - play vs anybody whenever you like.

I thought tgere was going to be pairings... Anyway, for easier viewing (IMO), here's everyone you have to fight against (i hope i didn't forget anyone...):

Seeing Moat on the list is just pure sadness.

People dont wanna play with spells, they wanna play with creatures.

So very true! Both phrases!

There are really strange things in that list: 4 people want to unban jitte and LoA!? Specially LoA, we've done and it messed up the game, even I a 100% control player which thinks aggro is dominating sees that LoA won't solve that and will only degenerate controls MU.

Also it would be interesting to see the relation between ban/unban. Because if the player who said ban to cycle lands didn't want LFTL unbanned, that is even stranger.

I really can't understand the hate towards oath, i know i've been a bit away.. but is this becoming a problem? I hardly ever see oath decks.

And again Moat being banned? Pure sadness. Did they give a reason?

Also, a very big "Thank you" to vazdru! :)

QuoteAbout Mana Drain. It looks like a dangerous card to me because it can just win the game so easily and really give blue the weird and mysterious mana ramp to resolve in a turn 3 Grave Titan. I haven't had troubles with it so far and I also like to play it myself, but that is really no reason to keep it unbanned. Isn't it too "random luck factor"?

Like so many other cards in this format... Random luck factor will always be present, specially in "one-of's-formats".

I think you mentioned all important HL cards. If I'm not totally wrong Karn's ultimate does "-14: Restart the game, leaving in exile all non-Aura permanent cards exiled with Karn Liberated. Then put those cards onto the battlefield under your control.". So you start a new game with the exiled permanents already in play.

Well, the restart the game isn't clear to me and until i read the FAQ about Karn's ultimate, I for one won't be 100% sure of what it really does.

Other things:

Blade splicer dividing into 2 creatures can be good or bad, if your opponent has a spot removal you're still going to have a 1/1...

Batterskull is slow? It's a 5 mana 4/4 with vigilance and lifelink which is harder to kill than your average creature, still i'd probably tutor  SoFI with stoneforge.

Beast within - It's instant! It hits everything! In monogreen aggro it can "save" 1 of your own creatures, it can trasnform your land into a creature. This kills titans, BSA, goyfs at Instant! I think this will surely see some play, IMO, and yes, not a bad card to play with oath too, you get a 3/3 i get a fattie! :P

Another set another review:

non artifact colorless

Karn - well, obviously it seems playable, 7 mana, colorless means it can be easily dumped into play with some kinf of accell. We have yet to know completely what it's ultimate does.

White:

Blade splicer - Not very bad, but for 3 CMC there are lot of better stuff out there.

Chancellor of the annex - more bluish than whitish, but ok. The reveal ability is quite powerful and our mull makes it slightly better, however too circunstacial and too big of a CMC to be very competitive, IMO.

Norn's annex - Well, moat doesn't see much play these days, and i believe this to be a bit worse than moat.

Phyrexian unlife - screams to be broken, but probably not in our format.

Remember the fallen - Not that bad, but not very good either. It goes well with the stuffy doll combo (via gifts)

Blue:

Gitaxian probe - I really don't like this phybrid 1 mana spells. This one is quite useful for combos, i'm looking at you TPS (hurray free spells)

Mental mistep - don't know if it's playable, but all colors getting counters screws a bit with the color pie, IMO.

Phyrexian metamorph - One of my favorites cards of the set. Very versatile and easily castable, again available to all colors. Might just see some play.

Psychic barrier - lol, carry on.

xenograft - don't know if this is breakable, but i heard ppl talking about allies. At that CMC it won't see play in our format.

Black:

Despise - With so much creature love, this ain't bad. But i mostly see this in MBC (or rock variants) which isn't that good of a deck

Dismember - agaian available to all colors, might lead to some aggro playing with this, since basically it's a 1 CMC removal..

Phyrexian obliterator - Akward, akward mana cost, but if playing with suic B or MBC would play this for sure!

Praetors grasp - again the cost (double B) + being sorcery makes it not so good. You're probably better off with your own tutors.

Sheoldred the whispering one - Not a bad target for reanimation, but there is better! Also for the CMC would definitely go with the titans.

Red:

Act of agression - Quite good in aggro, deserves testing at least.

Chancellor of the forge - first turn this, mountain, goblin guide, go! In our format too uncertain, but in other formats, might just see some play.

Geosurge - Cute card to play with your dragons! Still it means getting you 7 mana in your 4th turn, although you pretty red mana intensive, playable? Let's see.

Gut shot - free spell, is a free spell. might see some play, because it's available to all colors...

Moltensteel dragon - turn 4 playable? turn 5 go for 10 damage (if you were at 20).

Slag fiend - Not goyf material, but still, if you play with loads of cantriping artifacts, might be fun.

whipfire - nice board sweeper. Can't say for sure if would play this or firespout...

Green:

Beast within - one of the best cards of the set. Kills everything at instant speed. Would have expect to see this say: "destroy nonland permanent".

Birthing pod - one of the most talked about cards. It's no survival, but it's definitely playable, IMO.

Chancellor - can this be abusable in legacy/vintage? free mana is always free mana, in our format? too inconsistent IMO.

Fresh meat - the bear doesnt see much play, so this wont either.

Melira - quite interesting, i believe it combos with the white enchantment in this set (not sure, though...) But very cool design. :)

Mutagenic growth -  free spell is a free spell

Multicolor:

Jor kadeen - well, this seems completely off the set, IMO. But don't know the story, so, possible makes more sense if i knew. But bad card.

Artifacts:

batterskull - one of my favorite cards of the set. Seems extremely powerful. good for control and aggro, IMO. Being mythical probably means it will be expensive. Kind of reminds of BSA.

Darksteel relic - go, go metalcraft.

Etched monstrosity - ahhh, if only the meta was slower.

Hex parasite - playable, but still i prefer the needle.

Isolation cell - too expensive too see any play, i believe.

Sword of war and peace - better swords out there, but still playable.

Torpor orb -  Too circunstancial IMO.

Well, there it goes. Any obvious ones i left out?
