Basically, I am the organizer;-)

Our tournaments were established on demand of our relatively close HL community (about ten people), but then we have opened them to other people. So I would say most of the players know each other, and we somehow trust each one to be honest. The same is applied to the prices. We just throw back to the prices every money we collect on entry fee minus some ammount we give for the "venue". There really isn't any support.

I think some players won't be happy they have to write down decklists with 100+ cards. Another reason being that some players want to keep their "secret techs". But I would like to have decklists sometime in the future. It's not good only against cheaters but for more information you can throw back to the community to adjust their decks. Or for example for some bigger tournaments with bigger entry fee and prices.

There was Highlander Tournament yesterday in Prague. It was supposed to be the last possibility to test before new Season, which will start in October, so several players tried new deck and new ideas (me as well - Bw pox, but without any success really;)). 17 players, entry fee 2 euros. For prices Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, Watery Grave, Magus of the Moon and Serendib Efreet. We don't collect decklists, so I can't give you any.

1. Naya aggro (CORRECTED)
2. 5c aggro
3. BG rock
4. 4c control
5. MonoG ramp
6. WG midrange
7. 5c Oath
8. 5c aggro
9. WB control
10. MonoR aggro
11. UB control
12. MonoB aggro
13. WBG rock
14. MonoR aggro
15. Bw stax
16. Ub High Tide
17. MonoB aggro

Report from my point of view (i have played Bw stax including cards like Pox, Ensnaring Bridge or The Abyss)

1 round (vs 5c aggro - totally 2nd place)
First game I have made really a bad play. Opening hand was like 2 lands, Coldsteel Heart, Pristine Talisman, Magus of Tabernacle, Stoneforge Mystic, Crucible of Worlds. On turn 2 I have played Stoneforge Mystic for Batterskull, but he was killed. Turn 3 I draw The Abyss and played Coldsteel Heart, that was destroyed by Renegades and then I was wastelanded. I didn't draw any land several next draws. But I cannot blame fortune, I was supposed to play T2 Heart, T3 Talisman..!
Second game I had the opposite problem - too many lands, I really didn't have any chance.

2 round (vs monoB aggro - totally 14th place)
Game one he managed to dodge Academy Rector with sacrificing blocked creatures to Carrion Feeder. He had Reccuring Nightmare, too bad.
Second game he started with Gate to Phyrexia! (half of my deck are artifacts..) I was able to "kill" him with Abyssal Prosecutor but didn't draw any sack outlet.

3 round (vs monoB aggro (again;)) - totally 17th place)
No big deal - I have won quite easily.

4 round (vs UB control)
I have locked game with The Abyss, Ensnaring Bridge, Trading Post and other friends. But on the other side, there was Liliana Vess and Jace, TMS. Quite long game and quite close (most important was countering my Pox with daze, really).
Second game I have again created quite locked my opponent. With tutor I have found Armageddon, which gets resolved leaving me with 3 manastones and opponent with nothing. But it was end of round and I didn't kill my opponent in time.

Not wonderful success really, but it was fun deck to play with.

Deck Lists / Re: WB Pox

Thanks for responses!

I have tested this deck a little and I have to aggree with several points you have.

I wasn't that impressed by Tangle Wire. It is true that against aggro it isn't good and against control I have many other tools. Generally deck should improve it's matchup against aggro (althought it is not that bad). With all the LD stuff (like Geddon, Pox or Braids) I have some hard times to hit 6 mana and play Grave Titan. That is the problem Tombstalker don't have. So I will cut Titan and also old Sorin is too expansive. Cards I really was impressed with are Ensnaring Bridge, Leyline of Void (yeah!) and Contagion.

About the discard: I know that Duress or IoK is great (2 life for Thougtseize are quite a lot for this deck) and I am considering them. But now i rather want to have discard that means card adventage, that's the reason I prefer Hymn, Verdict and Crime (about crime I am not that sure..)

Changes:

- Solemn Simulacrum (i would rather have stone like coldsteel hearth than a land, it fits more into deck)
- Tangle Wire
- Grave Titan
- Raven's Crime
- Cabal Coffer's (they are not that great either)

+ Coldsteel Hearth
+ Necrotic Sliver/Oblivion Ring/Faith't Fetters (here I am not really sure, each card has it's pros and cons, what do you think)
+ Sorin, Lord of Innistrad
+ Duress/Iok/Wrench Mind (again, what would you prefer for this kind of deck?)
+ Maze of Ith (oops)

I would like to test Ghostly Prison and The Abyss. On paper I think they should be good, but what to take out? Also I am considering Silent Arbiter and Consuming Vapors/Barter in Blood/Mutilate (opinions?).

Thanks!

I have translated second part as well. When will be published next part? I have responses from several readers, that are eager to see part 3.

Anyway thank you for article again, it is very helpful for beginners and new members of our HL community.

Good article. I have translated the first part of it to Czech, and posted it on czech website. I will translate the rest as well.

Hi, I am from the same community as Ball Lightning (we're located in Prague, Czech Republic). I organize monthly tournaments, basicly without any support from anyone. And even though the attendance is quite stable, or rising a little (last season 15 players attended tournaments in average, there very 28 individuals). I also write from time to time some articles on czech magic website. I quite aggre with the others:

- let there be one international website, where will be articles and other content in english from different communities - I can help with some articles as well.
- let's make a group on Facebook/Twitted/Google+ connected to the website and forum.
- if there is another GP, it would be good to have trials for it. In Prague community some us are interested in attending such a GP

Hi, is there any idea where and when will be next GP in Highlander? I haven't attended any GP before, so I am not sure where to find the dates (I am not from Germany, but CZE).

Thanks.

Deck Lists / Re: UR Combo-Control
16-02-2012, 04:24:39 PM
Hi, (cau Miro)

I quite aggree with obojetnik. Changes you have made should improve perfomance of your deck. Still I would omit several cards (several are same as mentioned by obojetnik)

Sage's Doussing - I understands your argument about Vedalken, but let's think about this "combo". If you want to suprise your opponent, you need 6 mana .. well... If dont want to "suprise" and your searching for Doussing EOT, then your opponent knows about this counterspell. Counterspell, that isnt hard to play around.
Flulsterstorm - this card is similar to Spell Pierce saying "counter target spell or pay 2 mana". There arent many examples, where it could be "counter target spell or pay x mana, where x > 2". Well actually it is worse then Spell Pierce because you cant counter artifacts, enchantments and plainwalkers. Finally .. i wouldnt play Spell Pierce either.
38 lands + 3 mana stones + playing blue - too many mana sources. I would cut 2 lands and add one mana stone (I suppose Talisman with black mana - helps with mystical teachings and explosives).
Tezzeret, the Seeker - I know, you have add some artifacts in last update. But there are still too few of them, and half of them you dont want to fetch. If you play more artifact answers or thophter combo, tezz is great. But not in your deck.
Fire//Ice - not bad card. But without Isochron Scepter you will mostly play the "fire" part. So you mean this as antiaggro. Where is Slagstorm then, which is better against aggro as well as against PWs?
Spellskite - I dont think this card is a good one. You may say that it protects your combo. Vendillion Clique will protect it better and will be more versatille. Also If you cut Tezzeret you should cut this also (on the contrary this is better thing to fetch with tezz, so if you want to keep him, you may keep Spellskite as well).

What to add?
Tolaria West, Wasteland - I understand you want to be "anti non-basicland-hate-deck", but wasteland fits this plan very well. Tolaria can find you explosives and riptide laboratory, which could create some nice lock.
Vendellion Clique - yep, man!
some mana stone - talisman I suppose - instead of land, it can ramp you.
Ponder - instead of land, Ponder together with Impulse, Preordain and Brainstorm is "glue" of every blue-based deck.

GL with testing.

Hi, i am building RB goblin deck right now and would welcome some advice about gameplay.

1) Can anybody advice me some strong Goblin Recruiter chains on turn 2? What are the possibilities and disadvantages.
2) What do you think about Kiki-Jiki and Phyrexian Metamorph?
3) What kind of matchup is GBW hulk-pattern combo? What card choices helps here (some gy hate tutorable by goblins tutors?)

Thanks

1) It's always a bit risky to cast Recruiter on second turn but usually I search something like:
Warchief
Ringleader
Skirk Prospector
Mogg War Marshal
-after this it's much more situation and matchup dependent but most of the time you should go along the lines of:-
Goblin Piledriver
Goblin Incinerator
Goblin Chieftain, Mad Auntie or King
-this would be the first wave. Second wave could include something like:-
Siege Gang Commander
more Kings
Murderous Redcap
Wort
and so on...
Make sure you have access to at least 4 lands when doing this. Best second turn Recruiters are obviously supported by first turn discard to see if coast is clear.

2) Kiki-Jiki enables a tutorable combo kill but isn't very useful otherwise. Metamorph doesn't seem very good but then again I haven't tried it. Splashing Birthing Pod should increase the value of Metamorph.

3) Killing manadudes and landing Magus/Blood Moon seems like a good start. Discard is golden and Hulk is most of the time a bit clunky so fast starts+well timed removal might do the trick. If you have Pattern-Hulk in your meta and it poses an actual threat then you just might want to try combo them out faster (at least if they land an Academy Rector).

Thanks a lot for answers. My meta is quite different, because we are playing with players having 25 life at the beginning of the match. So its less aggroish.
There for I play Ruinblasters for example. I will post my list after some more testing.

Phyrexian metamorph is answer for some Natural order shenegains like Progenitus or also Thrun. It also can copy goblin with CIP effects. Truth being he is not goblin. So its tutorable only be Demonic Tutor (i dont have Imperial Recruiter).

I quite like cards not in your list:
Hero of Oxid Ridge
Reccuring Nightmare

And i am not sure about these cards (testing them right now):
Stingscourger - nice answer, reanimator in my meta as well
Clickslither - seems nice
Goblin Pyromancer - nice with sac outlet, and Moggcatcher trick

What do you think of them. And why dont you play Goblin Sharpshooter anymore? I have also thinking about green splash (tin street hooligan and maybe Food Chain of Fecundity), but i think that Moons are more important in the list. Thanks for more responses.
