coldcrow already mentioned Cockatrice in the "Alternatives to MWS" Thread some time ago.
You should really try it out.
The server is stable, if you lose the connection you can rejoin.
If you register on their page you can save your nick and save decks on the server to access them from every PC.
You can watch other players games or goldfish I think you can play multiplayer games (not tested yet).
Best thing its a multi-platform-app tested on both Win7 and Ubuntu no real problems.
The visual-style is a bit "basic" but you can change the background.
For windows there is an installer which makes it pretty easy to install everthing after the installation you can download the sets and pics.
For linux its a bit more difficult but still easy with a small tut on their page.
Didn't tried it on Mac but I think they have a precompiled Version for MacOS.
Would be really nice to see some Highlander games on Cockatrice
