Highlander Magic

Similar to the thread about Erfurt, I want to post continuous results of the Berlin HL-scene.

We have a weekly tournament with an average attendence about 12-18 people. Yesterday we started a monthly tournament series which will
be provided with a higher payout. My goal is it to post the results of those tournaments and give you guys an overview of the local HL-meta.


I´ll start this entry with the tournament which was held on 11.06.11


Final standings:

thanks for posting the decklists. i dont know what to think about this meta though, if somebody wins 5 times in a row.
shouldnt happen in a healthy environment, so the value of this information suffers a bit seeing those one sided results.

I guess I have a good run. But yeah seems suspicious but if you look at Iserlohn, Erfurt or Mannheim you see often the same people on the top.
I can guarantee that at least 50% of those players/decks are quite competetive and therefore you can assume the results counts for something.
Besides some player trying a new list every week and therefore they have to tweak some things.

I bet it's just the decks you play ;)

Very nice. It's pretty control oriented, especially for a german tournament where goodstuff and aggro run wild.

Question from a control lover: is it possible to get your hands on the decklists? I'm especially interested in the UBg Oath and UW Control lists.

Well the Oath list is from me so I can give you that. The UW version is pretty similiar to the version I will present this week on my magic universe column.

I would say Berlin is much more aggro-control/control oriented then other cities but we still have a good amount of aggro decks which are mostly 2c.

The addition of Brainstorm was expected as it is an auto include for this deck. I simply forgot it somewhere in deck evolution process to 4C. Also Ponder, Preordain, Personal Tutor and Recoup are very useful for the strategy of this deck but I was simply out of slots. At least Ponder and Preordain are now set in my deck as well.

Kitchen Finks/Wall of Blossoms have their matchups but I decided to go for Emissary (and now also Gatekeeper) in order to avoid missing land drops.

I wanted to have maximum instant burn against opponent's problematic creatures to shot EOT or in response, that's why I played Burst Lightning over Forked Bolt. Also kicker can be useful if you have to take care of plainswalkers.

I have not found a good enough reason to run Vesuva and decided to cut all CIPT lands for maximum mana availability. Dryad Arbor is either bad (gets killed before you have 8 lands) or great (Zenith ramp, Natural Order target, attack opp/PW, chump block). I decided to stay on the safe side but it is possible that playing Arbor is correct. The Kessig+Inkmoth choice is very borderline and most probably too random as you cannot finish in one turn. I currently test the Lighthouse to find Scapeshift in the late game and Cavern of Souls to push through the Giants but none of these cards are set for me at the moment.

Abrupt Decay is a nice instant removal which is a useful addition to this deck as it shuts down many problematic cards. I tested Maelstrom Pulse and Acidic Slime in this slot but both did not satisfy my needs.

Overmaster and Gitaxian Probe are not more than mediocre as they are consuming deck space and mana for cards which have more impact.

Chandra, and Faithless Looting do not get love from me at all as Chandra seems too clucky and situational and Faithless Looting is card disadvantage and I felt that I need every land and most of my spells.


I would like to advertise some of my card choices:

Trinket Mage/Sensei Divining Top: IMO Scapeshift is the best HL deck to put these two cards in as you have nearly always 3rd turn 4 Mana and a huge amount of shuffle effects.

Slagstorm/Rolling Earthquake: They are not only mass removal but also set the opponent to the 7 land kill in case you need to speed up. Sometimes you can also randomly kill a Plainswalker with it.

Explosive Vegetation/Hunting Wilds: IMO you want to maximize tutor and ramp for a solid 4th turn Giant or 5th turn kill and both cards help to do this.

Worldly Tutor: Is less predictable and more flexible than Personal Tutor and also enables 4th turn Titan and/or 5th turn Scapeshift. Sure, in theory you can have the Titan one turn earlier with Personal Tutor but it is very unlikely as you require a Dryad Arbor and I don't think that your opponent will let you untap with it, knowing that you have Natural Order on hand.

Wheel of Fortune/Timetwister/Foresee: Metagame Call against an expected midrange meta with few counterspells. My standard deck setup is now also Brainstorm/Ponder/Preordain.

I love the emissary, but hes not a viable ramp source so decided to cut him.  Blossoms is always replacing itself and finks are much needed.

I see the point in instant removal I played also burst lightning but had to cut it for abrupt decay

Vesuva is simply a 11th mountain, I think the deck can easily handle one etb land. besides its flexible. Lighthouse could be decent I was also thinking about the UG land which gives ur nonland spells flash but I guess if a utility land lighthouse is the call here.

Overmaster is simply cantriping if not needed (obv) but I guess if you have not enough slots you can always cut it. Probe is a simple autoinclude for me. Its function is quite valueable + its cantriping and your 100th card.

Chandra is just for testing in the deck, I think i ll cut her for slagstorm (was not sure bc of the RR) on Faithless Looting, Card disadvantage is not relevant in this kind of deck. The filtering is just so valueable and you can create so insane plays with y.will etc.

I agree on the power of top in this deck but I didnt want the 3mana spell on legs together with it. Its simply not good enough. WOrldy is a dead card in my opinion. I want my fast combo not playing with silly creatures (playing all three titans makes that statement a little bit awkward, but the tight card slots you were talking about lead me to that decision)

Twister is imo not as good as the wheel. If u are going to play such an effect I would play the wheel. I dont feel good about this card bc i couldnt test it so much. But in theory you should always get benefit from it as a combo deck, right?

Emissary has the crucial 2 mana cost which sometimes ramps to the crucial 4 mana slot. Even if it does not gain life it often takes out one attacker as the opponent does not want to ramp you. But actually Emissary will hit the grave sooner or later anyway (except against Heavy Control/Combo/Skies) which will help you to ramp to 8 sooner or later. I currently prefer Gatekeeper/Ranger over Blossoms as I can better follow my deck plan to reach 8 lands. Sure Blossom is better against aggro and in the late game but I want to concentrate on Scapeshift and therefore I think that Blossoms is weaker here.

??? until today I thought that Refuge only gives flash to my creatures. Another example of "Rtfc!".  I'll definitely give this a try as well as there are a lot of spells which are a lot better EOT and this is one of the few decks where you could have the mana for it. It's too bad that Refuge doesn't let you transmute EOT  :'(

And what is your 101st and 102nd card in your deck? :D I do not play +100 cards in combo decks (try to avoid it in general) and probe would be above 100 for me at the moment. Cutting one utility land would be the only way I could integrate it.

Certainly agree on the filtering in general but I disagree that card disadvantage is not relevant in Scapeshift. I even made the complete different experience as I often need every card in my hand to finish ASAP. Sure in the late game Faithless is gold but I don´t want to play cards for 1 mana which are useful for the late game.

But why don´t you play SDT, then?   ;)  Trinket is clunky, has no synergy with the deck and even has no other targets, but SDT is too important and IMO 2CC into 4CC is the best play Scapeshift can offer and Trinket/Top supports that. Perhaps cutting Trinket is the correct decision to include one of the cards which I currently want to have in my deck (Recoup/Decay/Probe).

??? But it supports the combo very nice. Sometimes I have to use it for one of the Titans, Witness or even Tribe Elder but in most of the time I use it for Dimir House Guard into Scapeshift   :o It even fits into the curve when you hit the 8th land.

In case you play in a sea of control decks you should give Panglacial Wurm a try  :o

How often did you kill with Valakut playing only 8 Mountains?

every time i hit 7 mana. you usually can deal 15 or 18 damage (5 or 6 mountains still in library), which is way more than enough since this deck is just a regular midrange deck that deals damage by turning creatures sideways. sometimes you can deal the whole 21, and very rarely (hast happened yet) you will be able to deal only 12 (less than 12 is so unlikely that its not in any of my calculations). this deck is a normal deck that deals plenty of damage and uses scapeshift as a very big burn spell when 7 mana are hit.

you cant play more than 5 "only red" sources (4 basic mountains + valakut) if you want to safely and reliably cast turn three courser/finks(double green) and nemesis/clique (double blue). if you have more questions about this build, feel free to ask. there is a reason for everything :)

Why do you play grieselbrands hound?

creaturwise: as you can see this deck plays 12 3-drops, which is quite alot, also it plays 6 5-drops. good, robust 4-drops are hard to find in rug and without the hound there would only be 3 4-drops in the whole deck, which was not enough for my taste. it had curve reasons..runner ups or alternatives are yeva and huntmaster here, the hound performed better in testing, for some decks its a nightmare to deal with (plus: i can slagstorm it away without losing much value). its an underrated card i think. (it trades with 4 toughness creatures that rug sometimes struggles with, smiter and thoctar and then leaves a body that basically can trade with anything. even vs 5mana value monster like thragtusk, this wins "the value war", trades and then just eats the token, i rather have a 3/3 double striker than 5 life)

The berlin meta is way behind, our decks would be useless for you. Better stick to 4c blood.

Which city really has the big heads?

Well I felt it was a bit odd to spam mtg pulse with 1-2 decks each week. I would think people are more interested in decks which are a) new or b) somewhat special.

If you want I can add my lists but to get them from other players would be a bit difficult besides with the upcoming of the meta-game masters tournament in Berlin I guess some people
dont want to spoil their techs ;)

I didn´t know that Mono G Midrange is a deck at all. Perhaps a metagame choice to beat Chain of Vapor  :P OK, I try to stop taunting from now on.

So what is Aggro Midrange, then? Similar to the HL Cup winners list, or...?  ???

Love to see the Top 3 lists to give the community food for thought. Seems that HL deck possibilities are still quite unexplored and the possible meta can be wider as some might think.

Maybe you should start a "berlin metagame" topic to discuss the matter.

I-m realy interested....
in the difference of T1 Borros and T3 Borros.

In testing I found some problems....mixing the right combination of colorsymbols. And mixing the high powerlevelcards of both colors just dosent work out.
Where is the right borros build?
Something like white weene with splash and Mono Red with splash onn the other end of the scale.

Until now I did not find the solution to make it realy viable.
If you Luca can give me a hint or some insight it would be very nice!

Best Boros build is called "Naya".

Best Naya build is called "Blood".

i, of course, have quite a few different tier 1 boros lists and one tier 3 boros list (though, admitted: i am no tier 2 boros list expert). i built the deck in foresight of fate reforged since it gets a quite a few new tools:

monastery mentor
soulfire grandmaster
alesha, who smiles at death
valorous stance
xxxxx (a white card that i believe is the big sleeper and i plan on acquiring thousands of those, cant share, sorry)

boros got quite a few cards that give it more play recently. dualcaster, heliods pilgrim (for chained to the rocks and splinter twin), containment priest, young pyro, even sarkhan (diversifying threats vs control) etc. plus it has the enlightened tutor/bloodmoon blowout and price of progress. i DO believe it has pretty good matchups agains "fair" decks. you gotta be careful with standard comparisons, but the rw deck sam black built in standard can hang with abzan goodstuff and the likes (even has good matchup there, 55% maybe) and that also made me lean towards boros and try it.

i dont have the list digitalized but it is more a midrange list, only plays 6 one drop creatures for example. plays sunstrike legionnaire which i feel is a quite a strong card. it comboes off with splinter twin and it does A TON vs creature decks, like so much that it beats them alone, it taps everything all day, it can get very silly (admitted: its pretty weak vs control, but the splinter twin threat makes it fine there too).it even stops the opponents splinter twin combo for a turn i realized the other day (just a sidenote). anyway, i'll try the tier 1 boros list again the next tourney and if i do well ill type it up.

Looks like an easy explanation to me... When I look at your results in berlin, I see only one first place of Eggs. And its a quite new deck. Players didn't know it and did not prepare for it. when replying to a post and talking about "legit arguments" one should make sure to actually check at least the two last pages of results. eggs won 2 times (you overlooked one) and conceded once in the finals to a friend (you couldnt know that). toffel i think played 5 tournaments with eggs and effectively won 2/3. and those are not small tournaments. people have been frustrated with academy for awhile here, its not just my sentiment. i would like to know who you are (i am sure you are from berlin, otherwise you wouldnt dare/claim to have an actual mattering opinion on this), we can have a discussion in private then.

Sadly I cant post the list yet since the MGM2 is comming and everyone in Berlin will run that deck since its doesnt have any bad matchups and dominates every
meta. But I can assure you I ve cut all the bad cards you guys keep playing (Obzedat, Garruk Relentless etc.) and included some sick mirrorbreaker techs (which magically also provide
a 67% increased win ratio against non Blood decks)

Alex is living in berlin but doesnt have much time to participate in our weekly tournaments. Tom is from Leipzig and used his free time to perpare for the MGM :)

About the lists, I can ask Alex tomorrow if he got his list in a digital form and I think the 4cblood list is pretty similiar to the 405 other versions already posted on pulse.

Another day of council member vazdru making questionable hints about his belief that 4c blood is far and away the best deck. If 4cBlood was as good as you make it sound and as you advertise it (maqi too, maqi speaks of 69%win percentages, more than caw blade had in standard- unhealthy) the format WOULD BE UNHEALTHY BECAUSE OF 4C BLOOD. A little reminder: you are in the council. Your responsibility is to provide a healthy format and you keep on mentioning/bragging how 4cBlood, the deck you play, is by far the best and is the ,,dominator". Every format (even the healthiest of all) probably have a best deck, but not a ,,dominating" deck. So if you were right, we wouldnt have a healthy format! So you as a council member are foolishly praising your deck to the maximum while not realizing you are saying something that (if true) would be a bad thing for the format (that you are kind of responsible for).
You see where i am getting to? Talk more about how healthy our format is or can be instead of praising your deck nonstop and tell us how ,,dominating" it is. It seems inappropriate considering your council role.

"broken.dec" won't include Fastbond this time because MGM2 is on Apr. 11th while Fastbond become legal on Apr. 15th
but there will be maybe some Eggs, TPS, High Tide or Scapeshift-decks which all have a good mu vs. Blood and could potentially called "broken" in some kind
but therefore anyone must be able to unleash its real power, MGM2 could be a good stage for
lets see what happens...

Ah sorry it was a bit misleading I meant 2 mana + the journey.

Oath trigger / journey on petal, ritual and will /draw one of them in your drawstep / cast deep analysis draw the other two and go off.

Why is this deck called "4cCascade"?

Looks like another 4c Goodstuff deck to me. Similar to "4c Blood" but with Blue instead of Red.
So I see no need to create a new deck name for this already well known archetype.

If I am missing something please let me know.

I called it that so people know its the same deck as the week before (same name/same deck for you guys information).

I am not sure why anyone would get hung up on a name of a deck, but yes i agree its not the most fitting name.

I do not really care about deck names. But I expected a new build after reading "4cCascade" or "5cValueCascade". Something built to abuse the cascade mechanic.

I didn't want to offend and I really appreciate your effort to post standings and decklists.

Is Hellrider still delivering? I played it for some time but was not satisfied by the damage output.

Same question for Boros Reckoner. He seemed to "slow" when I played it last time because he has no direct impact on the board. Maybe just a metagame call?

We made our regular friday tournament a test session for 3 of the 4 unban candidates: Jitte, Skullclamp and Gifts Ungiven.

- Leopold was not prepared for the test session (no Facebook, etc.). We informed him and gave him time for including them as a proxy/ play test card, but he decided not to.
- only 2 players included all of the 3 cards
- we decided to play 4 rounds instead of 3 to have more room for testing

Mentional situations:

Round 1:
- dmg race between Jitte and Cranial Plating
- Jitte got countered - Felix cried
- Nils drew Gifts Ungiven -> was not able/ did not want to cast it because it costs 4
- Felix won Game 1 after 5 minutes with Jitte on board, but opponent was stuck on 1 land anyway (kept 1-land-hand)
- Marvin complains about a very strong 4/1 creature with a Skullclamp on Steffen's board (makes blocking awkward -> afraid of direct dmg spells, which could be drawn by Skullclamp after block)

Round 2:
- Dion G1 vs. Florian with an insane start with Fastbond into Intuition turn 1
- Florian stole Dion's jitte with Dack Fayden -> equip on True-Name Nemesis -> Florian won G1
- Skullclamp hinder a meaningful attack against Steffen + draws him 2 cards -> won him this game
- Skullclamp draws Felix 6 cards, but he lost against Blood Moon
- Gifts Ungiven (Counterspell, Mana Drain, Dig through Time, treasure Cruise) wins Dion G2
- Benjamin finally finds a Skullclamp in his deck -> was completely irrelevant for the game
- Nils drew Gifts ungiven again -> was not able/ did not want to cast it because it costs 4

Round 3:
- Marvin won G1 with of Jitte and Gaea's Cradle (opponent: Crade start was insane, but the Jitte made him concede; he would not have given up against a sword)
- Dion won with Jitte, but describes it as a "speed-up" for the outcome and not the reason for the win

Round 4:
- Dion wins again because of Gifts Ungiven (Crucible of Worlds, Zuran Orb, Memory's Peace, Fastbond)
- Felix lose with Jitte and Skullclamp - more crying
- Nils' Jitte kills Felix' Fauna Shaman and with it his chance to come back into the game
- Dion still winning with insane Gifts ungiven piles (True-Name Nemesis, Eternal Witness, Regrowth, Crush of Tentacles)
- Dion vs. Marvin play 2:1 but announced ID

Marvin:
- won him games
- all 3 cards felt unfair (especially Jitte and Gifts Ungiven)

Nils:
- Gifts was, because of its costs, barely castable for him

Benjamin:
- no interactions with Gifts Ungiven
- barely drew Jitte and Skullclamp and barely played against them
- felt irrelevant for him

Dion:
- could live with a Skullclamp unban
- strongest card by far: Gifts Ungiven (won him several games)
- Jitte mostly only speeded games up (already good board state -> Jitte = win-more card)

Felix:
- saddest day of his life
- would burn Jitte

Steffen:
- Skullclamp was a nice add-on for him
- no interactions with Gifts Ungiven
- all 3 cards felt ok for RDW, but could feel not ok for his other decks
- would like to test them more


Overall:
- described the test session as refreshing/ funny
- even if Jitte was not described as win relevant, it felt for all interviewed participents unbalanced
- after resolving Jitte players often feels focussed on it, even if Jitte is not necessarely relevant
- Gifts Ungiven was described as totally insane and unfair in decks, which could abuse it (mostly Combo) and totally irrelevant and nearly dead in Midrange
- Skullclamp got the most unban votings at the end of the day
- samplesize (especially for Gifts Ungiven) way too small -> min 5/8 would like to test again
- participents of test session would not need more test sessions for Jitte, but definitely for Skullclamp and Gifts Ungiven (+ Birthing Pod)
- some players also prepared with solutions on artifacts
- partially people said, 2 relevant equipments led to distortions that only one tested equipment would not have caused (e.g. only Skullclamp would have caused less adjustment)
- Leopold left because he had a Bye in the last round -> no interview
- Florian dropped from the tournament after round 3 -> no interview

Finally some BANLISTED cards getting re-watched and tested under realistic conditions.
