Ende Juni ist es wieder soweit: Highlander Masters Westfalen geht in die achte Runde! Dabei kehrt die Turnierserie in die Stadt ihrer ersten Ausrichtung zurück, aber diesmal an einen anderen Ort: Gespielt wird diesmal in einem großen Seminarraum der Uni Bielefeld. (Übersetzung: Halbwegs bequeme Stühle und Atemluft.) Parallel dazu findet das monatliche OWL-Modernturnier statt, wenn ihr also Freunde habt, die nicht highlandern, aber für Modern zu haben sind - Füllt Autos und Züge und bringt sie mit!

Die Uni Bielefeld ist sehr gut erreichbar, es gibt reichlich kostenlose Parkhäuser direkt angrenzend, die Stadtbahn fährt alle 10 Minuten vom HBF zur Uni durch (Fahrtzeit: ~8min). Für Verpflegung ist im Hauptgebäude bis 14.30 die Westend-Cafeteria geöffnet.

Wir sind zurück in Münster! Nachdem die letzen Turniere in Dortmund, Bielefeld und Gütersloh weiteres Hochlandwild mobilisiert haben, geht es im Mai in die siebte Ausgabe im Comic Planet.

Um allen Spielern ohne Eternal-Pool das Mitspielen zu ermöglichen, sind Proxys in unbegrenzter Menge erlaubt, sofern sie qualitativ hochwertig sind und wie echte Karten wirken (Mindestens: sehr gute Farbdrucke, auf andere Karten geklebt, Kanten präzise geschnitten oder kaschiert - aber sie müssen noch als Playtestkarten erkennbar sein.)

(Das Turnier ist nicht DCI sanktioniert und wird nicht reported- die Nummern dienen nur der Organisation)

Es wird darum gebeten, Decklisten in digitaler Form mitzubringen, gerne verwaltet über deckstats.net. Wer diese Möglichkeit nicht hat, bringt bitte eine Liste in Papierform mit oder ein Foto, was alle Karten eindeutig erkennen lässt.

To enable all players, also those without eternal pool to participate, proxys are allowed in unlimited amount, as long as they are high-quality and feel like real magic cards. (At least: very good color prints, glued onto other cards, borders precisely cut or inked - but make sure your proxies are still recognizable as playtest cards.)

The tournament is not DCI sanctioned and will not be reported. The DCI numbers are needed only for administration.

Please bring decklists in digital form, e.g. administered via deckstats.net. Else, bring printed decklists or photos allowing for identifying every card.

Tournament Report

We are very happy to report a successful Highlander tournament in Bielefeld, Germany. As you all know, the format has suffered a downswing recently, with WotC boosting other singleton formats during the last years. To our knowledge, Berlin and Mannheim are the only remaining places in Germany to regularly host larger Highlander events (big up for that!). On this north-western side of Germany, we have a solid core of highlander players that have never abandoned the format, but this core is too scattered to establish a tournament series based in a single city, or to regularly attend tournaments some 400km remote for time and money reasons. As a result of that, a collaboration arose between the Bielefeld local store and the Highlander community from Münster, seeking to establish a tournament for the Highlander players in these parts of Germany, hoping to be able to make it a recurrent event and to re-ignite the Highlander spark in this corner of Germany and Europe.

The first event was very much able to live up to our expectations. 21 players gathered in Bielefeld to compete for victory over 5 rounds (best-of-three) of amazing Highlander magic. Among these people were at least six who had reached top8 finishes back in the times where Highlander GPs were a thing, with a total of more than 10 top8 finishes among them.

The tournament was won, undefeated, by Leif Stohlmann, piloting a white weenie Hatebears deck that was able to pressure and disrupt the opponents at the same time. Second came out Patrick Richter, playing Academy Combo, only losing the last round to Hatebears. Third was Sören Tenambergen with Jeskai Control, also with a 4-1 record. This field was followed by three players finishing 3-1-1, Björn Ortmann (UB Reanimator), Sebastian Potthoff (Naya Aggro) and André Brandhorst (UR). Two players with 3-2 records made it to the top8: Marius Schaefer (5C Reanimator) and Daniel Barenhoff (Esper Artifacts Control). Two more decks with 3-2 records were Oath and Esper Midrange. As the top finishes suggest, the meta in total was extremely diverse. While there were some decks overlapping in color or archetype, no deck was played more than twice (see breakdown below).

We are very satisfied with the great instant acceptance of this tournament. A follow-up will take place on September 16th (to be confirmed) - that being two weeks before the next MGM tournament in Berlin which we hope to provide testing ground for, and where hopefully some of our local players and highlander veterans will be able to attend.

@Spoils Mulligan

I agree that things have changed in MTG since the S.M. was established. I think the point might be, that it is not necessary anymore to get a stable manabase (enabling participation in the game). But, as others stated above, Screw, Flood and the like are parts of Magic, but rather unwanted ones. I think it is up to a test, what mulligan rule makes sense to apply.

In regular Magic, you often take lots of mulligans and lose due to screw / flood regardless of deckbuilding skills. That sucks. And that can be excluded from HL. It may well be that another mulligan is best for the format. One that is neither the standard one nor the spoils one. Playing with highlander cubes, our community agrees on the 'free-7' which is a good compromise. But I also think that the "dutch 7-6-6-5-5" or the like, posted above would be woorth a try. I don't think we need the spoils anymore. But it's wrong to say that new achievements in card pool matters legitimize a return to screw-flood times. Keep that in minnd.

@ banworthy cards:

I absolutely and totally agree that these three cards have no spot in highlander environments. They make parts of the format very uniformous and boring. To adapt the terminology used in the posts "If winning solely on the back of one card is what you like, Legacy is your format." The fact that they exist only once is in no way an argument to keep them. Why want a card that is, when it appears, clearly above regular power level?

Sure, none of rhe cards, win by themselves and they are ways to interact with them. But these ways are few and not acessible at all times for every deck. They have the potential to let a game fall to complete boredom in an instant. Like Jitte, Library of Alexandria, Survival or Tinker. (Praise the council for banning those) Get rid of them, I say. There is no argument for keeping them. A pretty and small banned list is nothing to desire if the cost is keeping cards like this! If it should turn out that the removal of those cards causes serious damage to the format, theres still time to consider.
