General Discussion / The future of highlander
09-07-2018, 11:12:31 PM
Hey guys,

my feeling is that our beloved highlander format is slowly dying.

The first big hit for my local scene here was the creation of commander therefore a lot or more casual players moved on.

For our area (southern Germany) the major tournament organized by JK former known as GP went from a breething 1nce a year 150 player event
to a 8 person event largely because the organizer did not listen to the community and did events with hall entries and without "event" feeling
like artists lots of stores etc (hit the other formats there as well < 50 modern and legacy with hundreds before).

Now there is magic online duel commander out there as well and there is canadian highlander that got some popularity.

I think there should be a non commander competitive singleton format. But I doubt that there is room for multiple of those formats.
A couple of years ago I made the statement for the first time to try to unite the different singleton formats worldwide into 1 community driven format.

Personal I see the canadian version as the way to go because of various reasons:

- it allows any card which is why I and most of the long term highlander players I know love the format (nowhere else you see so many different cards out of the history of magic interact)
- most of the stupid discussions / conflict that we had in the european highlander format were about bannings / unbannings
  - my deck was banned
  - the card I invested in was banned
  - I have to fear my deck get's banned
  - card x should have stayed in the format
  - ...
- it also has no commander and 20 life

Someone / some of the european guy(s) may go into the canadian council and work in future on the global competitive highlander format
My recommendation is get together, start a online league / tournament to explore the format, survive.

Anyone sharing my feelings?

It seems that Highlander this year will only be a side event starting at 4 in the afternoon at the event in FFM which in good old years was the biggest tournament for us every year and in the past the GP or something like the GP.

Are you also sad to see this development?

Here are the results for the April Win-A-Dual tournament as part of our Monday-Night-Magic.

We had only 8 participants, some guys decided to draft because of the new set.
I'm hoping for stronger participation next time.

Price pool: 1. Plateau Revised, 2. Wooded Foothills, 3. Sacred foundry, 4. Painland

We now raised the participation fee to 8€, this way it was possible to get a good price payout even with 8 players.

Final Standings / Meta:

1.  Andreas K      Izzet Control     7
2.  Jens H         RUG Twinshift     7
3.  Felix H        Abzhan Midrange   6
4.  Stefan S       BUG-Combos        6

Price pool: 1. Plateau Revised, 2. Bloodstained Mire, 3. ~5€ Value

We agreed to raise the participation fee from 5€ to 8€ starting next time as with the spiking dual prices otherwise you will have a to top heavy price support, or you always give Plateaus :)

1.  Andreas K      Izzet Control   9    58.25%

Here are the results for the February Win-A-Dual tournament as part of our Monday-Night-Magic.

We had 15 participants, still growing.

A couple of non highlander players are starting to build highlander decks I assume because of price support and a regular tournament.

Price pool: 1. Scrubland FWB (german), 2. Bloodstained Mire, 3. Chord of Calling, 4. Foil Jace Beleren

Final Standings / Meta:

1.  Matthias F     Pattern Rector 12
2.  Michael D      UB Control     10
3.  Jürgen B       4C Blood        9
4.  Andreas H      RDW             9
5.  Fabian B       Naya            7
6.  Markus F       Blood           7
7.  Felix H        Blood           6
8.  Andreas K      Atifact-Combo   6

Here are the results for the Jan Win-A-Dual tournament as part of our Monday-Night-Magic.

This was the first one of this series and we had 12 participants where I'm pretty happy with (even some none Highlander players build a deck and participated).

1.  Dominik S   TwinShift     12
2.  Ardijan W   Hightide       9
3.  Florian H   RDW            9
4.  Andreas K   Academy        7
5.  Markus F    Blood          7
6.  Stefan S    Oath           7
7.  Felix H     Blood          4
8.  Jens H      Gruul-Aggro    3
9.  Simon L     MonoU-Control  3
10. Michael D   UB-Control     3
11. Jügren B    Blood          0 - Drop
12. Matthias F  Esper-Control  0 - Drop

I assume good payout of 1. Dual (Savannah) and 2. Fetchland (Bloodstaine Mire) + finding a date where most people where available via doodle helped to get some people together.

This will be a monthly event which I will announce in the future earlier on the mainpage.
Will be always on a Monday, visitors are welcome :)

Hey guys,

I've read the announcement of the WMCQ Weekend in Frankfurt (organized by Jens K.) and noticed that there are Tiny Leaders Cups on both event days.

As the Highlander tournaments are always the biggest format beside ptq (bigger then the legacy or vintage ones) I was wondering why there is no Highlander Cup / event there.

Has anyone spoken with Jens?

There is a bigger highlander tournament planned for the roleplay-convention in cologne.
Below you find the key points.

Date: 01.06.2013
Location: http://www.rpc-germany.de/
Start: bis 12 Uhr
Cost: 10 Euro (+ entryfee for the convention)
Price support: Gaeas Schoß (played), Badlands (poor/Revised), Tropeninsel (played/FWB), Tropical Island (played/Revised)), Tropeninsel (excellence/FWB), 2 x FTV: Lands, 1x Commander Arsenal,
Top 8 will pick by from the prices by rank.
The announced pricing is calculated for a 50 player event. If there are more or less players the prices will be in or decreased.

Off-Topic / Highlander GP 8
13-12-2010, 02:19:43 PM
As it's only a few weeks until next year and the Germanmagic 2 tounament, I want to ask about next years Highlander GP.
I had a talk with Jens Kessel about 2 month ago to get this announced Highlander Event in Hanau (which is not a
GP size Event) and he asked me at that time if we are interested in having him as the TO for the next GP in 2011.
During the Germanmagic 2 I think there will be some talk about this and I want to ask if there is any decision yet
if we want to have a GP 8 2011 and where it should be located.
Jens told me that it would be possible for him to do it in the same timeframe he did it this year in Hanau but he
could do it in the "Ruhrgebiet" (I think somewhere around Iserlohn) as well.

We finished our first HL tournament in würzburg with success. We had 20 participant, I think for the fist time this is quite an acceptable number. The winner was the well-known league member goblinpiledriver with his 5C-Alara-aggro deck, so he could get the mana drain home. We played 5 rounds swiss and here are the results.

1. Jochen Korbel 5C-Alara-aggro
2. Peter Gehring Naya
3. Andreas Keupp UW-Fish
4. Florian Hering Bant with Natural Order
5. Arno Makowha RG-Aggro
6. Adrijan Wisen Hightide with Mind over Matter
7. Timo Dinger White Wheenie
8. Maximilian Stief Reanimator
9. Christian Schmidt UWR-Control
10. Christof Stührmann RDW
11. Frank Mann Reanimator
12. Fabian Breitenbücher Rock
13. Stefan Stührmann Staxx
14. Axel Heid RWG-Midrange
15. Pinkl Tobias UGW-Control
16. Enrico Eckstorf UG-Control
17. Claus Wiedenroth UW-Control
18. Felix Naß GWB-Aggro
19. Fritz Stührmann Mono-R Goblins
20. Andy Heid UWB Big Things

So as you see the machup was quite mixed. The tournament war really nice thanks to all guys who where able to attend especially the ones with long distance to arrive (Jochen and Maxi).

Announcements / Germanmagic 2 29.-30.12.2010

As some of you have seen, there is another germanmagic end of this year. As highlander was one of the three major formats last year as well as on germanmagic 1.5 (hl gp) this year in june, why don't we have highlander as main event this year.
I think the highlander communtity had last year about 120 participants, which was quite good and on the germanmagic 1.5 highlander was the most played format with more participants then legacy and vintage. Is there someone out there who is in deeper relation with Jens, so that we can perhabs make it possible to get a highlander main event again this year?
I asked for it in the mtg-forum where on of the tournament organizers posted about the event and is still answering questions. Below you find some links with related information.
